Developing Painting and Drawing with Deirdre Macleod, Tutor

Friday mornings, 9.00 am 12.00 noon The Drawing Room,

St Margaret’s House Studios 151 London Road  Edinburgh

Starting Friday 21 September 2018

£72 per five-week block / £56 concessions (over 60; under 21; unemployed)

Purpose of the course

This course will help you develop your skills in drawing and painting by developing your awareness of colour, composition and expressive techniques. You will learn how to develop your own ideas by experimenting with different ways of making images. If you wish, you will learn how to work on a larger scale and on different surfaces.

By the end of the course, you will have learned how to use a range of techniques and materials to make drawings and paintings that express clearly your own ideas and will have developed confidence in your own personal visual language.

Teaching will be organised around a broad theme for each 5-week block, but the tutor will respond individually to each student’s interests, aspirations and experience of drawing and painting. We work through group discussion and tutor-led talks on other artists work.

During the early weeks of each block, there will be tutor-led, guided exercises to help students explore aspects of painting and drawing in a structured way.

Students who wish to work independently, with one-to-one guidance from the tutor, are also very welcome.

Students can work in any style or water-based medium that they wish (that is, acrylic, gouache, watercolour, pastels, mixed media. No oil paints, I’m afraid, for health and safety reasons at St Margaret’s House.)

A list of materials that students should bring with them will be issued prior to the start of classes. Materials should cost no more than £20.

There will be a supply of one-sided card available for students to purchase from the tutor.

The tutor will provide a selection of materials for students to experiment with. The cost of these materials will be covered in the course fee.
